Client Spotlight: Kim!

1

I like to periodically “spotlight” Hurst Strength clients who have put in a lot of hard work with their workouts, nutrition and overall lifestyles in and outside of the gym.  I do this primarily because they deserve the recognition and I’m grateful to be a part of their journeys, but I also spotlight in hopes of motivating others who may be doubting themselves or on the fence about starting a program.

When I first met with Kim, she was a newcomer to exercise and a little iffy about where to start.  I was super excited to work with her not only because I knew from the start how dedicated she would be, but because since I’d be her first exposure to a serious training and nutrition program, I’d be able to help mold how she approaches both.  I’m a firm believer in taking a balanced, sustainable approach to get leaner and stronger and that what you do in the gym and in the kitchen should enrich and add value to your life, making you better from the inside out, rather than beating you down or making you feel restricted by a rigid, inflexible plan – so I was glad I’d be able to pass this on to her.

After our first meeting, I left Kim with the homework of making sure she ate protein at each meal and to take brisk walks as often as she could, along with her 2 days/week of strength training.  She hit the ground running with my advice and within a month went from being able to do 0 push-ups, to regularly busting out sets of 10+ off the floor and lost an overall 8 inches.

Since then she’s lost several more inches, is down multiple pants sizes and is currently working towards her goal of a 200lb deadlift and an unassisted chin-up.

The most admirable thing about Kim is that she works 50+ hours/week starting at 4am everyday, has a daughter who just started school and maintains a regular social life while still making time to accomplish all of this! Kim’s secret is consistency.  Consistency did not mean that Kim had to be 100% perfect every week or that she couldn’t enjoy herself while on vacation or out to eat – consistency just meant showing up week in and week out, giving her best effort, always asking questions and doing her best to learn more and keep moving forward.

Here’s what Kim had to say:

“I’ve been a member of Hurst Strength since June. I wanted a lifestyle change and didn’t know where to start. I was never the type of person who liked exercising or eating healthy so I knew this would be a struggle for me. Through another client is how I learned about HS.

I knew after the first time sitting down with Erika that this was where I wanted to start this journey. Erika and I discussed what my goals were and what I wanted out of this experience and I remember telling her I just wanted to lose weight. At that point Erika was explaining to me how she wanted me to be comfortable with my body and understand what my body was telling me. I didn’t understand what that meant 5 months ago but now completely understand it.

My body has become stronger, I’m listening to my body, and people have noticed the changes I’ve made. I’m so happy with the progress I’ve made at HS and can’t wait to see what else this amazing journey has in store for me.”

I couldn’t be happier for Kim and all that she’s accomplished so far, I’m super proud to have her as part of our HS family and can’t wait to keep guiding her forward and watching her keep kicking ass!
